How to cut onions without crying

Onions can sometimes be a big hassle because they make you cry, below is some solutions which will prevent your eyes from irritation and watering.

·  Before chopping onions, keep them in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. By doing this the onions will become cold and crisp and the juice from the onions wont hurt your eyes.

·  By lighting a candle next to the work area before you begin to cut the onion, will make the juice from the onion burn before it reaches your eyes.

·  Cut onions underwater, this will prevent the juice reaching your eyes.

·  Chop off the root end and toss it before you start dicing. This is the part which has the irritation.

·  When holding a wooden spoon or a piece of bread between your teeth while cutting the onion, will reduce the irritation from the eyes.

·  If you are using a sharp knife there shouldn’t be any tears, because a using a dull knife will make the onion crush rather than cutting it, which releases more acid.

What absloutely works every time, is to light two burners of the gas stove and turn on the hood vent, (vented to outside, of course) chop the onion on the counter as close to the flames as you can. The flame draws the chemicals coming from the onion in the air into the flames and then out the exhaust. Guaranteed you won’t even smell the onion! No gas stove? Light two or three large candles around the area you are working, and turn the exhaust on. Not quite as good as gas stove, but it works.
