New Delhi urged to hold Modi responsible for Gujarat genocide
Wednesday, March 14th, 2007Supporters of Human Rights in India (SHRI, shri-usa.org), a Twin-Cities based human rights organisation, has called upon the Government of India to hold Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and his cohorts “responsible for their crimes” in the Gujarat riots 2002 and “to bring a sense of security back to the religious minorities of that country,” said its chairman Hyder M. Khan in a statement here Tuesday marking the fifth anniversary of the tragedy.“We strongly urge India’s government to hold Mr. Modi and his cohorts responsible for their crimes and to bring a sense of security back to the religious minorities of that country. We also urge the people of Minnesota to not ignore India’s human rights record as they move towards strengthening economic ties between India and Minnesota,” said Mr Khan noting that it was the “the brutal display of extreme religious hatred.”
“Ordinary Minnesotans can have a huge impact in trying to get justice for the victims of Gujarat by expressing their concern,” he added.
Mr Khan said his organisation believes: “Gujarat is not India and Mr. Modi is not the standard bearer of the decent and law-abiding Hindu majority of the country. However, we are very concerned that this case of justice delayed now runs the risk of becoming justice denied. On the verge of becoming a global economic power, India loses a lot by a suppression of human rights, either by action or inaction.”
Recalling the gory picture of anti-Muslim genocide, Mr Khan said during these riots “almost 2,000 Muslims were killed and over 200,000 were made homeless in an atmosphere of moral darkness. International human rights organizations, human rights groups in India, and India’s own Supreme Court have highlighted the implicit involvement of Gujarat’s state government in those riots and its reluctance to bring the culprits to justice.
“However, after five whole years, most of the guilty still roam freely in Gujarat, and its Chief Minister Mr. Modi’s henchmen often brag about having taught a lesson to the minorities about who the boss is,” he lamented.
